Questions about customs
Is there a duty-free allowance on the Holyhead–Dublin ferry?
Yes. Since Brexit, Great Britain counts as outside the EU for Irish customs, and Ireland counts as an EU country for British customs. So both directions have fixed allowances for alcohol, tobacco and other goods.
How much alcohol can I bring from Holyhead to Dublin?
Per person: 1 litre of spirits (or 2 litres of drinks up to 22 %), 4 litres of still wine and 16 litres of beer, according to Irish Revenue.
How much alcohol can I bring from Dublin to Holyhead?
Per person: 42 litres of beer, 18 litres of wine and 4 litres of spirits (or 9 litres of drinks up to 22 %), according to GOV.UK.
Can I take cheese or ham from Ireland to Britain?
No. Since 12 April 2025 you may not bring beef, lamb, goat or pork products or dairy such as cheese and milk from the EU into Great Britain. Stena Line confirms this applies on Dublin–Holyhead. Exceptions include limited infant milk, medical foods, chocolate, bread, cakes and biscuits.
Can I take meat or dairy from Britain to Ireland?
No. Ireland does not allow personal consignments of meat, milk or their products from Great Britain. Bread, cakes, chocolate, confectionery and pasta without meat filling are allowed.
